An aficionado of classical music knows the importance of silence between
movements and even during movements. As someone else said, the silence is as
important as the notes being played. Of course, pauses between movements were
originally used to allow the musicians to turn the pages of their music to
the first page of the next music, but there are examples of compositions that
contain several seconds of silence during a movement, usually called
"resting," used to set a mood or state a point.
IIRC, Karl Haas produced a program about silence in music several years ago
on his "Adventures in Good Music" program.

(I just might try a little AM on 80 meters tonight... we'll see.)
