Subject: Re: [BC] Changing channels
Willie,
I did have a Harris (Gates One) up until July of 04. It would go
down to 5 watts, without bad distortion. I now have a Armstrong,
X-1000B. I found it saved me about 50.00 a month on the AC bill, vs.
the Harris. The Armstrong will go down to my night power with no
problems. When I ordered, I the factory set it up that way.
I don't really like the idea of a separate LPB box. I not knocking
them, but it can't out run the Armstrong, with both running 50 watts,
modulation wise.

Today's modern transmitters can be set at power levels between almost
zero
and full power. In one box, you have an "infinitely" variable power
level that
can be assigned to each of those presets with a few turns of a
screwdriver. (Or
a code punched into a computer-based interface.) For example, our Harris
Gates 5 has six presets. With a simple contact closure, we can select
any one of
them. Each one has its own trimpot, so we can set them to any arbitrary
power
level we desire. I have verified acceptable operation all the way down
to 50
watts, although Harris only spec's it down to 500. (It's a 5K box.) It
can be
set lower, but the audio quality starts to suffer a little. It's also
quite
wasteful to run such a large unit at "flea" power like that. Better to
buy an LPB
box for levels below 50 watts.
