[BC] Origin of acronym QKT

Wasn't QKT the Western Electric designation for their basic voice coupler,
the thing you were supposed to order back in the day when mere mortals
weren't allowed to connect "foreign equipment" to telephone lines?

I figured this was some random Bell System part number, similar to
KS-whatever, but if there's a meaning behind it, I would be interested in
learning more.
