Not sure if it is true or not, but using aluminum wire makes a great
deal of sense as long as the connectors are correct and don't allow
joints to deteriorate.

While it is true that copper has a lower resistance it also has poor
mechanical strength in the pure form. Anything done to make it stronger
increases the resistance. OTOH, an aluminum alloy such as 6061T6 is
very strong, light and the increased resistance can be compensated
by using slightly larger diameter. This has the added benefit of
reducing the series inductance of the wire.

This is a case where it is not about the material per se, but about
the overall effect of the material on performance.
