[BC] Things We Forget About Top-40 Radio

Let me bring up an interesting point about Top-40. Patti Page had Old Cape Cod on the Top-40 (pop) charts (#3) at the very same time Little Richard had Jenny Jenny (#10). They were played at the same time on the same stations. At that time, the segue from song to song wasn't used. The jock spoke over every song and most of the time there was only one spot per break. This would break up the songs and you didn't have the clash. Many, even broadcasters, seem to forget this. It was not by design but it worked.

So, it may have sounded odd, but those songs did co-exist on the same charts and were played on the same stations. It's the basis of a format I've been developing for the last year. I won't use the word "Oldies" . To some listeners, they're just songs they haven't heard. (I heard this phrase used on Turner Classic Movies and stole it because I believe it says it all). I will buffer Patti Page and Little Richard either with stop set, jingle or liner. Segues can be used with similar sounding songs from similar eras.
I'm lucky to live in a small town with the right demographics.

That was an interesting format...WPTR in Albany N.Y. did that up until a
couple years ago. A mix of MOR & 50s rock & roll. Sounded odd to hear
some Patti Page weeper cold-segued into Little Richard.
