[BC] Westinghouse at NAB - WPEN?

I was a kid back in the 70's and used to listen to WPEN. It did
indeed go off the air for several days while a tower site
overhaul occurred. When it came back on, the day signal was
noticeably improved at my house in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
I couldn't hear them at night due to their DA, but after the
Overhaul I remember hearing lots of "sideband splatter" at night
on 940 and 960, even though there was barely a trace of the station
on 950. I often wondered why that happened, but figured it had
something to do with modulation (they were really loud then) and
tuning.

That I don't know, but I find it hard to believe that a major market
station would go off the air for a few weeks, especially back then.
There
is always a way to get *some* kind of signal on the air, even if it's
lower power.
I note that the old Overbrook site where I worked appears to be the
current Day site, which is, and was, 5 kW N-DA, but now a different
night
site is 21 kW DA, but I think that came along much later.
I guess there is now only a single tower at the Overbrook site?
