I know it sounds like a huge waste of funds... Have you tried KVM
extender... 50' is really at the edge of normal operating range. I'm
surprised the NT machine works.

Subject: RE: [BC] computer question
Been there, done all that. Yes, it's a PS-2 mouse. The cables work on
the NT computer, so it must be in the XP PRO program. Swapped meese all
over the place. An optical mouse lights up, just won't work. That same
mouse plugged directly into the computer works. Beats me.

Couple questions....
This is a PS2 mouse ?
PS2 is a serial 9600 baud protocol, so 50 feet should certainly work.
Can you ( temporarily ) try a different OS on the problem machine ?
A Knoppix CD, for instance.
Does the problem machine work without the 50 foot extension ?
How about a different extension cable ? wait... I see you did try that.
25 foot cable ?
Different mouse ?
Swap mouses ? ( meeses ? ) ( mice )
