OK. That's a bit more info than we had.
All and all, I'm still suspecting a difference in the port hardware.
It would be real nice if you could install NT on the machine that's
not presently working, but I suspect that isn't realistic.
Now that we know about the 40 foot cable, I suspect your next step
is ( as others have suggested ) a good KVM.
One last thing you might try ( if you haven't already ) would be to boot
the machine with the mouse plugged directly into the port.
Once up and running, and the mouse working, unplug the mouse and
move it to the far end of the extension cable without shutting down or
rebooting.
Does it work now ?
If it does, and apparrently reliably, then it could be a driver thing.
Move it back to the port, again without shutting down.
Does it work now ?
