>I'm one of the millions who used to think (hell, not think; I was CERTAIN)
>that duck tape was a mispronunciation of duct tape. Not true! Duck tape is
>correct; duct tape is the corruption. The tape was NOT developed, as most
>think, to tape the joints of air-conditioning ducts to prevent the escape of
>air under moderate pressure. Although you can use duck tape for that
>purpose, the idea that that application is the genesis of the name is urban
>legend. The tape is named for the fabric from which it is made and the
>fabric is called "duck." I don't know how duck fabric came to be called duck
>fabric, but I don't think it has anything to to with aquatic birds that have
>webbed feet. So when you hear somebody refer to duck tape, it's NOT lazy
>pronunciation (as in noo' kew ler); "duck tape" correct!

... the owner, by assignment, of the registered trademark Duck Tape?

I quote (emphasis is mine) ...

"Consumers, contractors and DUCT tape enthusiasts searching for the
strongest, stickiest and most durable Duck? brand DUCT tape need to look
no further. Henkel Consumer Adhesives, Inc. (HCA), a company with more
than 30 years experience in the DUCT tape business, announces the
addition of Duck? brand Ultimate DUCT tape to its existing product line.

"The strongest and best in the Duck? brand line of DUCT tapes, Ultimate
Duck Tape? is the ideal tool for repairing, fixing and sealing almost
anything. It can be used to delay permanent repairs with extreme strength
and it?s also ideal for jobs that need ultra strength, like bundling wood
or construction materials.

"Possessing superior strength, durability and adhesion, Ultimate Duck
Tape? joins HCA?s existing DUCT tapes, including Utility, All-Purpose,
Professional and Industrial. The complete line affords users the ability
to pick the DUCT tape that best meets their specific needs."

So ...

Duck? brand tape is indeed a duct tape, according to the owner of the
registered trademark.

First came duct tape (about 1960, as I recall, as a replacement for
applied asbestos tapes, in HVAC applications).

1980 brought us Duck? brand duct tape.

The chicken-or-egg argument comes down to: duck was first, while Duck?
brand was second.

Gaffers' tape, a somewhat similar product, but intended for temporary
application of gaffer's (i.e. studio lighting) equipment, was introduced
about the same time as duct tape.

I quote ...

"Gaffer's Tape
"Duct tape without the residue

"If you think duct tape is useful, try Gaffer's tape, known by the brand
Permacel (P-665). It's the standard film industry tape. Easy to rip with
your hands yet very strong. The adhesive is designed to not rip off
paint. My film teacher stuck some on the school wall and left it sit for
the whole day under a kilowatt of light a few inches away. The next day
it peeled right off leaving the paint on and no adhesive residue."
