When I was CE at 13-WAVZ in its rock days 1977 to spring 78 we had
another local AM that at times sounded louder. We had an MW-1 with a
custom audio chain I designed. Everyone said it sounded like FM. It was
fairly loud and very clean. The other station had a tube RCA 1 kw tx. On
some songs it did sound louder, but more distorted.
The older rigs which had iron had more phase shift and poorer square wave
response than the SS counterparts. In some ways this filtered out the
distortion created by the processing. I preferred our cleaner sound to the
overprocessed sound. This was pre-NRSC, of course.
