You may define these older processors as "junk". By today's standards
they are not multiband, have distortion canceling clippers and the
'benefits'
of new technology.. In their day, however, they were as modern as the
digital products on the air as I type. In the future the Orban 8500, Omnia 6
and others may be referred to as "junk".
The old Pultec EQ's, UREI LA-x Series, 1176, Fairchild and other gear
is in great demand. So much so, they have appreciated in value. Any audio
processor, be it tube, solid state, hybrid, or digital produces a signature
sound.
It is this signature sound that many prefer. How many people, I mean
civilians,
criticized the harsh sound of CD's compared to vinyl? It is the 'sound' we
are talking about. NOT technical specs. This is one of the reasons we no
longer do audio proofs. Some devices such as the BBE, Aphex and EXR
*purposely* introduce distortion to obtain a signature sound.
I can criticize the design of hundreds of directional antenna designs.
Multiplied
arrays to start. By every technical and mathematical rule and analysis I
would
be inarguably correct. Stepping back and looking at the big picture, what
do I have the original designers in the 30's and 40's NOT have? Moment
method analysis, matrix circuit analysis, etc. What is one person's junk is
another's treasure. Many people, granted technical types, STILL want the
pumping, breathing sound of single band compressors. So be it. Some
like spinach, others Sushi, broccoli and I like ice cream..... If someone
prefers
the Sta-Level sound, I respect them for that. This is the fundamental reason
we
have different manufacturers with different processor designs and presets.
