[BC] tube sound (tube transmitters)

Ditto. It got to the point that I was spending $1000 a year (4x$250ea) on
4-400's for my old RCA. Between tubes & power savings, I figured that it
would take 7 years for the new Nautel to literally pay for itself. And it
never breaks... I think it's popped off in thunderstorms twice or maybe 3
times over 4 years. (Jeff W, I love this rig!)

I hated to turn off the RCA, cause, dang, that's a Transmitter. But I've not
even heated up the plates since we turned on the Nautel. And a local Ham's
finally made me an offer that I really can't refuse. I sold him a Bauer 707
several years ago, he did a wonderful restore & retune on it. I know that
he'll give the RCA a good home in it's retirement. I'm a businessman... he's
a hobbyist. Happy endings all around ;-)

What Kent doesn't understand is the savings in electric and tubes. DO
THE MATH. In one year, after buying tubes and the getting the electric
bill, I save more then enough money that would be going out in a tube
rig. I've gone from paying an AC bill of 450.00 with my Collins 20V-3 to
150.00 per month using the Armstrong Transmitter. Bear in mind, my
studios are with the transmitter. I got sick and tired every 6 to 8
months, buying a set of 4 each, 4-400 tubes, 807's, 6SJ6's, etc. It
made no sense. I thought the power company and the guy I was buying
tubes from were coming out ahead more than me!
