I realize they have to. When I asked about porting they told me they 
were having trouble with Vonage releasing numbers. I took a Vonage 
number when I signed up rather than porting a Verizon number. Maybe 
that's the reason.

When I moved to my current location there was no Verizon cell 
service. I called Verizon to be sure I wouldn't be charged a 
cancellation fee. They said no. I went to Cingular and they simply 
took the Verizon number. Verizon's tune changed. Because Cingular had 
taken the number on the spot, Verizon threatened to charge me the 
$175 fee. It took a supervisor to waive the fee.
