Scott,

I think you're missing the point here.  Charles didn't say that this was
the equipment his station used for its day-to-day operations.  These were
machines that were kept around to recover historic material, or at least
interesting things that weren't available in other, more modern media--
like the ET's I found, and am hoping to hear someday.  Sounds to me like
a good way to make friends in the community.

As much as I enjoy learning from the old-tech, it's awfully nice to be able
to sit down at a fully-loaded, state of the art switcher to do a newscast.
I'd love to be able to play around with an old RCA board sometime, but don't
ask me to do an election night on one, in 2006...
