Harold said that WNLC's signal went mostly out to sea.
That was true of the 5-kW six-tower night signal (a teardrop pattern beamed
southeast), but the 10-kW day signal (three towers, IIRC, only one of which
was shared with the night array) was even more weird in its way. The day
pattern was a broad, slightly lop-sided and only a little-bit wasp-waisted
modified cardioid, aimed directly at WMEX Boston, a mere 77 miles to the
northeast. When WMEX increased to 50 kW-D (with a two-tower cardioid, aimed
out to sea from a coastal location--but that's another story; it actually
covered quite well), we had 10 kW and 50 kW AMs only 77 miles apart. I
think that at least one month per year (and probably more), the Boston and
New London sunset pattern changes didn't coincide so that WMEX cut its
carrier while WNLC was still on day pattern/power. When that happened, you
could hear WNLC clearly in the Boston area--and it wasn't the skywave you
were picking up. Dana Puopolo undoubtedly has many more interesting
WNLC/WMEX stories; I believe he was CE at WMEX for several years during the
period of interest.
