According to the "preliminary technical specifications" in my old
McMartin catalog, the BA-50K used a pair of 8990s as finals in both
the modulator and RF amp. No other tube types are mentioned.
One of the McMartin reps who called on me in 1980 (when I worked for a
Class A FM and had no interest in this beast) gave me the full sales
pitch, which still sticks in my mind because it made so little sense.
He told me "stations really don't need PDM transmitters" like an
MW-50. Instead, McMartin's product was the best choice, thanks to
the "oil-filled modulation transformer" (why, of course!)
Here's a trivia question: McMartin offered a "special order" version
of their 25 kW FM box with a single-phase supply. I know of at least
one station in the northeast that had one -- can anyone name it? And
were there any others?
