I had the great pleasure of spending a few hours in Shepherd's
presence. About 1971, while I was a student at the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst, Shepherd lectured at the Campus Center
auditorium. "Lectured" is really a misnomer - he told stories.

After the "lecture" a meet-and-greet was held in one of the
conference rooms. By midnight the crowd had dwindled to just one
other student and myself. Shepherd noticed that the staff seemed
eager to close up and go home, and he asked if there was any place
nearby where we could get a cup of coffee and a bite to eat at that
hour. Fortunately the Campus Center coffee shop was open 24/7, so the
three of us adjourned there, and the other student and I got to
listen to Shepherd for another couple of hours.

Of my meetings with famous people, that is one of the two most
memorable. The other is the day that I spent a few hours with Edward
Rowe Snow, another great raconteur.
