Yes, the Bell Labs are much smaller now, with many locations closed, but 
they are alive and now part of the AT&T spinnof called Lucent Technologies. 
At the time of that spin-off AT&T kept a smaller number of reseachers at the 
newly created AT&T Labs.  Also don't forget about Bellcore created as the 
replacement for Bell Labs by the "Baby Bells" and which drew many of its 
staff from the Labs.
