Tim,

If you go back and read the archives of January 2005 of Radio-Tech and
May 2005 of the Broadcast list-servers, you can get a pretty good idea
of the disparate views on this type of apparatus. These devices fall
into what is called Charge Dissipation devices. None of these devices
are approved by any professional organization that is directly involved
in lightning protection (IEEE or NFPA). They have been turned down as
providing no effective protection. There are a lot of gimmicks used to
demonstrate their so-called effectiveness; I won't believe them. They
are designed to impress the unknowing. There are a number of websites
which discuss the weakness of various lightning protection devices.
Here are a few:

The only really effective way to protect your systems is through a
solid low impedance ground system and a single-point ground at an access
point into your facility with appropriate lightning protection devices
connected to that single-point ground on all circuits entering the
facility. Somebody's comment about the cell installers having it right
is very true. BTW, I have never seen them using any charge dissipation
device either on a cell only tower.

That's my two cents and I really don't want to get into extensive
discussion as happened last year,

Bruce

Hi Everyone,

What seems to be the general consensus on the effectivness of the
Static-Cat lightning system, Is it hocus-pocus or have some of you guys
had
good results..and what are the caveats you've found. I have clients
that
have the system and swear by it...and others who think its all garbage

science. Clients of mine that have the system seem to experience less
trouble due to indirect strikes damaging sensetive equipment...and I
have
not been directly involved with the systems installation myself. Ive
only
come across them when aquiring a station for contract work... Thoughts
of
the brain trust?

Thanks Guys (and perhaps Gals)
