The problem is that the RIAA has buy/bought into their own marketing BS!
They interchange the word "digital" with the phrase "Perfect Sound Forever".
Rememeber this marketing hype phrase when the first CD's came out? It was a
load of crap then (remember CD rot?) and continues to be to this day. At least
CD's (with their compleytely lossless data) DID sound better then the average
analog vinyl playback syatem (and I'm saying AVERAGE HERE - as I firmly
believe that a high end system always DID blow away CD's quality wise). Audio
that's bit rate reduced by over 90% produces FAR from perfect sound, (indeed,
I'd say that 7.5 IPS analog tape sounds better then it does) yet the RIAA is
so scared of it they sue anyone who tries to do anything creative into the
twilight zone. See, the **AA wants to completely CONTROL digital. They want it
for themselves - to market (or not market it) it as they please, to decide
what formats are adopted, etc. etc. And so far Congress has let then maintain
their virtual monopoly on it. If Congress had done the same thing to the
publiching industry (who either didn't want it, or don't have big bribery $$$)
there would be no such things as laser printers, USB pen drives or probably
even floppy disks!
Frankly, I don't get why the **AA has SO much control over Congress (you do
know that the Broadcast Flag reared it's ugly head again this week - it's been
inserted into some spending bill, and this one has practically NO exceptions
for anything - I'll bet it was 100% written by the **AA!).
Makes me wonder how many members of Congress actually HAVE relationships with
livestock (and how many pictures the **AA has of them!).

The RIAA has everyone so spooked about theft that no one is willing
to risk years of litigations. Remember, this is the group that went
after kids downloading music. While I don't like the idea of theft of
intellectual property it seemed counterproductive to sue your
customers. I don't think they make a distinction between music and text.
What seems foolish to me is their fear of digital, except for the
ability to copy CDs. All the devices they worry about are not CD
quality and aren't exact copies of the originals any more than an
analog copy would be. I can make an equally good copy from the analog
outputs of most of the devices they attack.
They should be worrying about the future ability to copy HD-DVD and
Blu-Ray discs bit for bit.
Wouldn't a "raw" data stream include the audio content, as well?
