As someone who comes from a "telco family" (father worked for Western Electric 
for forty years, brother at New York Bell->Bell Atlantic->Verizon, sister at 
AT&T->Bellcore) I can testify to the scope and size of the original Bell 
organization.  Like all huge organizations, it had its good and bad points.

Of course, I myself "defected" to the opposition and became a 
broadcaster... :)
