And here is an example of which you mention.
Al Gore did not say he INVENTED the internet, as you
point out. The issue of his web page has no bearing on the
debate either however.
What he did say, was that he CREATED the internet, which
was no more than a stupid choice of words.
Here is the quote from the actual Wolf Blitzer interview,

During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in
creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range
of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic
growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.
"
It clearly puts the legend of him claiming to have invented the
internet down, but it does show the power of the internet.
I don't care of the man, but if I was going to take issue with
him about something he did, it would not be his claim to
"Creating" the internet. I would tend to look at his families
enviromental policies, those of the "enviromental vice president". Those
