Elizabeth, NJ's 1530 WJDM uses a folded unipole antenna that is only about
50 feet tall. Its electrical height is 57.7 degrees, and according to my
rough math, that comes out to about 100 feet -- twice of its physical
height.
Another station with a short folded unipole is 1170 WWTR in Bridgewater,
NJ, with an electrical height of 60 degrees. Some of the surrounding
trees are taller than the tower itself! WWTR is also only 243 watts, non-
directional. This came about because in 1990, the station went dark and
its original 500-watt directional array was taken down. A guy bought out
the license and finally put it back on the air in 1997, and he only had
the land and budget to put up one tower, so he applied to change it to NDD
status, which resulted in the drop from 500 to 243 watts. However, the
old directional array nulled out some areas which have seen tremendous
population growth, so the new non-directional signal actually has come in
handy to reach these areas, even with the reduced power.
