The failing of the traffic services I've heard in other markets is the use of
nicknames instead of route numbers for the Interstates. Here in Pittsburgh
there are three highways with nicknames... the Parkways East, West and North.
You're right Barry, those designations are not on any highway sign.
Otherwise, referring to landmarks or nicknames hasn't been a problem for us.
The location of backups and accidents on the interstates are given relative
to the nearest exit.
Problems on surface streets are referred to by either intersection or block
number. Crime scenes are referred to as police incidents.
Our traffic guys/gals and their support staff stay on top of traffic by being
constantly on the phone with local police throughout the region. A
helicopter is up during drive times. They have a list of construction projects which
they air during off-peak times.
Listener calls about tie-ups are transferred to the traffic folks.
Metro provides a good analog service. Our competition offers digital
traffic. I guess that means either its moving or its not.
Hope this answers your questions,
Frank
