With all of the TV and FM translator activity taking place today, it's
interesting to consider that the very first translator stations were
put together by "pirates" who wanted to bring television to isolated
western communities, but couldn't do so without breaking the rules.
Years later, the FCC bureaucrats realized these should be legalized,
and now there are thousands.

In fact, many other technical innovations were initially developed by
"outlaws", as discussed in Bob Cooper's recent book "Television
Pirates: Hiding behind your picture tube".  I happened to meet Coop
-- the home satellite dish "pirate" -- in M2 Antenna's booth at this
year's Dayton Hamvention and bought a copy.  If you don't mind working
your way through 928 pages, it's quite a captivating (and inspiring)
