Sometimes it seems that way! Actually, since the 1970s, a lot of 
liberals and moderates began using the term "progressive" since it 
encompasses both the liberal and the moderate point of view.  It's a 
bigger tent, rhetorically.  I expect that some conservatives are 
trying to find new words for their positions too-- there are social 
conservatives, fiscal conservatives, etc.
