[BC] Tape deck issue

I'd first suggest a thorough cleaning of the tape transport: the capstan,
pinch roller, and tape guides and heads. Built-up debris on the rolling
parts will do exactly what you describe. Use denatured or 91% isopropyl
alcohol and Q-tips.

Next try to determine if the bearings in the capstan and/or pinch roller are
stiff. A little lubrication will help here. Use a fine oil for small
appliances; do NOT use 3-in-1 oil. After lubricating, be sure to clean any
traces of oil off the capstan and pinch roller with alcohol.

A worst-case scenario would be that the capstan motor is going bad. Or
possibly the capstan belt is bad.

There's nothing you can do if the tape was recorded on another machine that
has these problems.
