I've seen many of the el-cheapo consumer grade netgear's fail for no
apparent reason- other then just the fact that they are poorly made and run
buddy firmware.  Their pro line on the other hand is good stuff, but about
10-15x the cost.

For a reliable home router pick up the Linksys WRT-54GL.  It runs linux, and
you can either use the stock firmware (which is pretty good) or load many
third party applications to make it more versatile for your needs.
