Willie,

I know that your experience is mostly AM at this time.
Permit me a few lines to enhance your knowledge and
correct the statement that feeding the x1000b into the
GE is "just plain *wrong*!!".

The most basic building block of an FM transmitter is
the exciter feeding the final amplifier with or without an
Intermediate Power Amplifier (IPA) in between. The
exciter's power level is bosted to a sufficient level to
drive the final amplifier and produce the Transmitter
Power Output (TPO) level necessary to achieve the
FCC licensed Effective Radiated Power (ERP).

There are at least two stages of amplification. As a
matter of fact, the exciter has a Modulated Oscillator
stage which is very low power to begin with.

What I am pointing out here is that essentially the Mod
Osc is a small transmitter feeding higher gain amplifier
stages. So it is with the GE. The Gates Vanguard transmitters
were a linear amplifier output tube fed by a low power
AM solid state exciter.

>From the above there is NOTHING wrong with the x1000b
feeding the GE, just like there is NOTHING wrong with a
microphone feeding a preamp. Of course, the x1000b MUST
feed a 50 ohm input on the GE or else impedance mismatch
will cause distortion, spurious and/or harmonic emissions and
poor overall efficiency.
