<< NBC's NIS all news experiment failed even
though it allowed positions in the clock for local news. To my ears,
the problem was that local stations didn't have resources comparable
to NIS and the local stuff sounded amateurish. Another issue is that
news doesn't have a long TSL. Recall "Give us 22 minutes and we'll
give you the world" of WINS, New York. >>
KQV began its all news operation as an NIS affiliate. The loss of NIS when
it folded meant more time for local news and affiliations with CBS and Mutual.
Our GM Bob Dickey came to the station from 1010WINS. He used the
predictability of the WINS format. The slogan remains "give us 22 minutes." The format
also melds in WCBS since our wheel is in 30 minute pie pieces rather than 20.
The half hours mirror one another.
The format can be made to work in midsize markets as strictly news rather
than the news/talk that passes itself as being news. KQV may not be in the top
10. But enough audience knows we exist to attract advertisers to pay the bills.
Oh, we're locally owned too.
There's also a smattering of sports, a dose of Bruce Williams when we don't
have local informational programs, "When Radio Was," and an automated version
of the dayside format during the overnight.
