Hydrogen Selenide is extremely poisonous.

Selenium rectifiers consist of metallic selenium plated
on aluminum. In the presence of moisture from the air,
all the elements necessary to perform the reaction shown
in the Wikipedia article are present. There is no sulfur
present so the smell is not from Hydrogen sulfide.
Instead, if is from one of the most poisonous substances
known to man.
