Ergonomically, I'd suspect the "horseshoe" or "U" shaped design is
pretty efficient - else it wouldn't have lasted for nearly 100 years....
Puts everything readily to hand in a space-efficient configuration, or
so it seems. No really long arms needed. The "L" shape is another, if
you want or need to leave more floor space open.
Usually, when something that's as readily re-configurable as a console
layout remains in one form, there's a reason...
The pictures I saw on most of the suggested sites were, in fact,
variations on the "U" shape - even the "swervy-curvy" ones.
Even basic office furniture follows this - the main desk, and a return.
Credenza across the back not attached to hold less-frequently-needed
stuff... (rack wall behind console op position).
