It really requires some research into the kind
of transmitter you would like to install as well.

You don't want an odd power rating that runs a
transmitter at a power level that is significantly
different from what the manufacturer initially
designed it for.

High gain antennas have many nulls that can cause
problems with automobile reception as well as
"picket-fencing" if you have significant activity
on your SCA channel. 

Ideally, it's the brute power that floods an area
of interest, while the power realized from a
high-gain antenna may go over the heads of most
of your listeners. Beam tilt works if the
coverage area is only a specific city. However,
if you want to be "heard everywhere," You need
a good site, high transmitter power, and
a medium gain antenna.

WSRS comes to mind as an near "ideal" situation.

I suggest you find a "near ideal" station near
you and copy their ideas about antenna power-
gain and TPO.
