Well I went down to my supply closet and grabbed a brand new connector and played with it a bit. It's a neutrik NC3MRC. It is designed to put the cable out the side of pin 1. However it will work the other way. You can just screw it together the opposite way. It will basically work in any direction but it clips together nicer with the bend towards pin 1. once you screw it together it will not move. Hope that help

Seems to me I was able to put a Neutrik together the way it worked best for
my particular application (microphone end connector). There was more than
one way to "skin the cat" as I recall, tho it's been a while since I did one
of these.
