The Linux operating system is solid. However, the learning-curve might
be steep for those who are unfamiliar with Unix. Most Linux distributions
now have a reasonable graphical interface wrapper to shield the unknowing
user from the harshness of two-letter commands and command-line programs
that assume you know what you are doing!

I have used Linux in embedded systems that don't get a chance to reboot
once-a-day like the typical Windows systems. You certainly wouldn't want
to stand in line at an airport while a bunch of Windows computers went
off-line to get a software update to fix a memory leak that would only
allow it to work for 8 continuous hours!!!

I watched a technician replace the First Officer's "glass cockpit" display
unit when a 777 flight was delayed in Dallas. I was chagrined when I noted
that it booted Windows CE.

Cheers,

Craig,

Knoppix was my first exposure to Linux; you're seeing just how solid an
OS this is. I'm running Ubuntu, another Debian derivative, on my
personal computer. It just runs and runs with no problems.
