I run FreeNAS on an old 730MHz PIII. A SATA Raid card supports a
pair of 500GB drives as my main file server plus a single 750GB drive
for backups. Like you, my OS runs off of a CD. With Samba running,
the folks in the office can't tell the difference between it and the
old Win2K server.
Fast, simple and cheap. What more can you ask for.
