We used to maintain highly filtered positive air pressure into both
transmitters (which saved them both when the building roof caught fire-one of
the reasons that GM Dan Griffin replaced the former engineer with me). We
would spend two nights a year when 3 of us completely cleaned the
Continental-each one taking a cabinet and then working on the HV power supply
together. We'd do the same thing with the Harris. We'd also do routine
cleaning every month. Both rigs were so clean that you could eat off them. I
use a 50/50 mixture of high quality windshield antifreeze and denatured
alcohol for my cleaning solution. Yes the Continental passed square waves with
the diff in. We rolled our own using a 3 opamp configuration and 5534s,
powered off the 24 volt internal supply and with its own 20 volt regulator.
Prior to that I had put a 111C in there, which also made a big difference over
the UTC input transformer it had.
The last time I saw that rig, it was terribly dirty-you could barely see the
dull glow from the driver tubes because their chimneys were so dirty inside. A
few months later it caught fire. What a sad ending to a great rig.
We also had a Power Rock as a third backup that was completely disconnected
from everything, but could locally be put on air within 15 minutes if
necessary.
I ran it one night a year on air for testing-the other two rigs were well
maintained and worked great while I was there.

The 317C3 has an active 5534 differential input. The WLS one looks like it
did when installed in 1989. In the 1978 air (kept in place from MW50)
handling design any outside air passed through a 12 inch deep pleated 48 x 48
bag filter and 48 x 48 x 1 pre-filter. While its 22 yr old it has about 10
run years.
Good square-wave response is still a good go test even though it was removed
from the 'Audio-Cyclopedia' in later edition.
