I have used Knoppix 5.1 which boots from a CD.  It can access a NTFS drive 
that Windows won't see so files can be copied from it to another storage 
such as a USB flash drive or external drive.  It does have a Windows-type 
desktop, but I have found it useful.  Booting a computer from the CD has 
been very useful.  I also ran it as a server for a year or two and it worked 
fine.

The later Knoppix seems to be missing some things, so I haven't really used 
that.
