Actually, you can

1) turn off the address book pane; that clears the "garbage"

2) adjust the separator between the inboxes/accounts, and the contents 
to suit. 

3) set T-bird to open the messages in a new window, rather than a pane 
of the main window.

4) ditto on the compose new message screen...
