Huntsville's NBC feed was daisy-chained from Chattanooga / Knoxville /
Tri-Cities / Roanoke / Richmond / DC / ??? .
For some reason, ( tariffs I suppose ) the path at Chattanooga was
from Knoxville / Chattanooga AT&T / Chattanooga affiliate / back to
AT&T / then several hops to Huntsville. The most unreliable part of
the path was the
AT&T to the Chattanooga affiliate and back to the AT&T toll.
AT&T wouldn't feed Huntsville direct from their bridge from Knoxville,
and we were always having to call Chattanooga AT&T when the return
path to them from the NBC affiliate failed.
If I was persuasive enough, I "could" get a patch to bypass the
problem for the duration of the outage. Never could convince them to
just "forget" the patch.
One of the AT&T engineers was testing our AT&T termination equipment
behind our UHF GE transmitter when our chief engineer came running in
and asked him if he planned to have any more children.
That's the last time I ever saw the guy and the AT&T supervisor was
really pi$$ed off at our chief.
