Willie,
We are not kidding. They came along just before transistors did them in. They are fairly conventional except as I recall they used the first grid running slightly positive to drag the electrons out and accellerate them, and then controlled them with a second grid.
The ultra premium high gain low noise pentode type 7788 that Western Electric used in long haul telephone amplifiers ran that way too. "Control" grid biased positive by a little, but also had the signal applied over the bias. Supressor grid often run below cathode potential. Transconductance over 50,000, and good up into the VHF frequencies.
The 12AE6 sticks in my mind as one of the types, but that was a long time ago.
Probably could get them still from our local electronic supply in Billings...they had until a couple years ago 2E5 magic eye tubes! And no typo...2E5.
And you could make a unique-looking radio with 2C26's. Plate and grid both came out to top caps! Looked like a little devil! It was in WWI I think mostly. Used as a pulsed negative resistance transit time oscillator. The basic tube was very low u and had 5W of dissipation in the plate. Ran into a tuned line set, and was pulsed to about +2KV on the grid and simultaneously about -1.5KV on the plate, to get a pulse power of about 500 watts. Sold surplus at Fair Radio out of Lima, Ohio for a dime apiece; I had lots of fun with them.
Ahh, the good old days.
