Well, I'd have been comparing cost of living index, and such long before
 considering applying, but that's me.....

My best recommendation, is to put anything and everything you can
into an economical storage facility for a while, then move into a long-term stay
 "hotel" for a few months.
Since you can be reasonably confident of staying in the "extended stay" place
for a month or so, you are in a GREAT position to negotiate a rate.
I've done as well as $22 / night, INCLUDING a hot "comp" breakfast !
( that was IN metro Dallas, at a Day's Inn actually. $35 in Chicago, and if memory
serves, less than $50 in Boston where an apartment can run well over $1.5K / mo. )
You'll have no electric bill, heat bill, or phone bill to worry about for the duration.
Probably have Cable TV and high-speed net access included.
Cost less than leasing an apartment, when you consider the utilities,
but your commitment is limited to what you negotiate.

This way, you can become familiar with the neighborhoods, rental rates, grocerie
stores, etc. without signing a lease right off the bat, and finding out you made a
 mistake !
It also puts you in a much stronger position when negotiating a lease on
an apartment, as you need not be in a hurry.
