In a full digital system we will have less than the analog to analog sky
wave cochannel interference we have now.
The problem for the MW band is the interim hybrid analog + digital
operation IOW IBOC (so called) but this was the only way to satisfy
the vested ownership interests and they are the ones with the political
power.
In the long run, if we ever get there, full digital operation will be
superior to the present day AM service and it will have the over-the-
horizon capability that is lacking in Class C VHF channels.
My concern is that we are three or four generations away from the needed
truly portable receiver technology that will allow digital MW to replace
AM. We need the equivalent of the 1960's pocket transistor radio.
If IBOC gets off the ground, this will come. Compare a late 1980's 286
with a Blackberry or a bit Moto bag phone with a present day Moto cell.
Size and power will shrink as we move through the generations, and the
prices will fall.
The problems is not full digital radio, the problem IMHO is getting to
that point in the foreseeable future.
