For satellite programmed stations they have the handicap of not being
able to be local. Every region had hits and versions of songs that were
peculiar to that area/station. What was a hit in one area never received
in another.
For example, Sonoma's "Love For You" never made the Billboard Hot 100
but was a tremendous hit in Hartford, CT despite the fact that they were a
California group. On one of Rhino's Have A Nice Day CD's the song "Fallen
Lady" by Punch was on there. A big hit on KHJ but unheard of back East.
So satellite providers play it "safe" with universal, mass appeal hits. When
I
programmed a station, I had no format clocks, a huge selection of songs
and promoted this fact. It was successful and widely accepted.
As for versions, I once had a shouting match with a longtime friend and
music aficionado over the "right" version of Judy Collins' "Both Sides Now".
In NYC, WABC played the version from the "Wildflowers" LP whereas
Hartford played the 45 version. We were both right...for our regions.
