Most audiologists who deal with school kids will tell you their
hearing loss begins very early. Stand near a kid on the NY subway
who's wearing earbuds. Even with the ambient noise level of the
subway (squealing brakes, alone, are over 110dB) you can still hear
remnants of music from their headsets. I've actually seen people take
their lives in their hands and ask a kid to turn it down.
I have a few friends who are school principals. One of their biggest
problems is the inability of kids to hear the teacher.
