This is quite true, especially here in the US.

If not the Smithsonian, certainly some stations in poorer countries, where 
Analog is king. You may be able to donate them to a non-profit org that has such 
stations. You can even write them off at purchase price. (If I remember 
correctly.)

That's a far better option than the dumpster, if nobody here wishes to buy 
them.
