Atlanta has a street called Ponce de Leon Avenue, named after the famous
explorer. However, locally it's pronounced "Ponse duh Lee-on", rather that
the French way. When Yankees began taking over radio in Atlanta, the
carpetbaggers who were brought in to do traffic reports couldn't bring
themselves to say it that way because they thought it sounded too redneck.
So it became "PDL".
But we've got you all beat in Pago Pago (Pahng-O Pahng-O). We have all
kinds of place names like Fagatele, Fagotogo, Tutuila, Nu'uuli, Olosega, and
Pavaiai. And we don't dare do birthday announcements on the morning show
because many Samoans have names like Ponolobogofo Sagapoletele.
