Maybe your part of the world is different.
As for HD ready - - -
Although I DO have an ATSC tuner and a cable card, plus off air
reception capability I rarely use either. Only when the DVR is recording
two shows and I want to watch a third. When I got my set, all I had to
do is plug in the HDMI cable between the cable box and and the set,
BINGO HDTV, 5.1 surround the whole works. Anyone with cable does not
need the ATSC tuner. To me any set that is HDTV ready IS an HDTV set.

There are many HD 'READY' sets in the stores, but very few HDTVs in our local Best Buys (I only found two in 30-32" LCD TVs at Best Buy when I bougth mine). Best Buy only carries one HD converter box now and it is about $225. Although all the local stations are broadcasting in HD as well as the soon-to-be-terminated (Feb 2009) analog, there seems to be no demand for the HDTV yet as there is no demand for HD radio yet.
