>>From what my brother told me, the MTA union caved because the rank and
file didn't have the stomach to take the $1M/day fines and bad PR for
wages
and issues new hires were going to encounter. That and a LOT of people
had
issue with MTA bus drivers making more than many people with 4 year
degrees. Sorry, I too find it hard to stomach a bus driver making
$100K/yr. straight time.<<
There were a few other reasons too:
1) The two leaders of the TWU were only a few minutes away from being
jailed for contempt of court when they ordered the rank-and-file back to
work.
2) The Taylor Law (which prohibits strikes by unionized public
employees) provides for a 2-for-1 loss of wages for any striking
employee (for example, a worker who strikes for three days loses six
days of pay). That adds up pretty quickly.
