[BC] Achieving good S/N

The Level Devil was a real piece of work.  It was an expander-compressor, 
and when a nominal signal level was present, it refrained from doing damage 
in the pumping mode...but at that level it had a wonderful trait of suddenly 
going into 10 db of expansion...full out...not proportional to signal.
